Social Standard© is the culmination of Part One: Lost in Reality and Part Two: Books of Life within the series entitled Reredos Roberts Chronicles©. Originally these existed as separate manuscripts, Michael decided to combine them to accurately reflect the plot of the story. After a devastating personal tragedy, bestselling author Reredos Roberts retreats to his isolated fishing cabin, abandoning public life and the manuscript he owes his publisher. Consumed by a strange new obsession, he slowly loses his grip on reality, withdrawing from society for years. A chance encounter with a woman jolts him back to reality. Reredos finally finds the spark to write again, only to discover that the world he left, changed beyond recognition. The Department of Social Standards, a powerful government agency, has begun the quiet dismantling of public libraries while criminalizing ownership of private collections of books. Their secret enforcement arm, known as Match, conducts interrogations and raids under the guise of protecting citizens from “undesirable materials.”
Daisy, a newlywed whose husband has been seized by the Department and detained in an undisclosed location, refuses to surrender to fear. Alone, in their Minneapolis home, she continues writing her manuscript, Flower in the Thicket, as an act of defiance. Professor Gibbons, her husband’s former literature professor narrowly escapes a Match raid at the university's English Department, he reaches out to Daisy. Together, they form the Saviors of Knowledge, a covert network dedicated to preserving books before they are erased forever. Even through the now strictly controlled world of academia, SOK learns through their network of a group on a similar mission. The Arm of Artemis, a militarized group led by a retired general who’s actions are financially driven. Meanwhile, Department of Social Standards enforcers, Match, spreads it’s authority like water across the land. Daisy soon discovers that Reredos is being detained at an old Army Base. She’s unaware that ruthless Censor Davidson, who arrested him, is now forcing Reredos into being the architect of the new Constitution of the rebranded nation, Republic of America.
In a world where artisans are deemed Social Agitators, their art, music and literature is on the brink of being written out of existence. Unlikely allies must decide how much their willing to sacrifice to save the culture of humanity. The struggle continues, does knowledge belong to the few? Or to the many?
